Associate Professor Dr Bilyana Tomova (8 February 1965 – 8 May 2024)
It is with great sadness that we inform you of the loss of Associate Professor Dr Bilyana Tomova – a Bulgarian member of our Compendium community.
Bilyana Tomova was a leading academic in the field of cultural economics and an outspoken advocate of cultural policy.
As Associate Professor at the University of National and World Economy, Sofia (Department of Media and Public Communication) and Visiting Professor at the National Academy of Theatre and Film Arts, she has mentored several generations of creative producers, managers and professionals in the performing arts, film and media in Bulgaria, as well as a number of doctoral students.
As co-founder of the Observatory of Cultural Economics, she has pioneered research on cultural and creative sectors and industries in Sofia and Bulgaria. Together with Dr Diana Andreeva, they have been contributing to the Compendium for over 12 years.
Her expertise was highly valued in the fields of performing arts, film and media, as well as cultural management and cultural statistics. Bilyana participated in many research projects, most recently the Horizon 2020-funded CICERONE, where she made a solid contribution on global production networks of audiovisual industries and festivals.
The untimely loss of Associate Professor Dr Bilyana Tomova has deprived the Bulgarian cultural community and academia of one of its brightest personalities. Her precious legacy will live on through her numerous published works, as well as through her colleagues, followers, students and friends.
Our Compendium community has lost a dear friend, a beacon of knowledge and an inspiration to many in the field of cultural economy in Bulgaria and beyond. Her loss will be deeply felt by all those who had the privilege of knowing her and by the entire Compendium community.
