Cultural statistics are vital because they help national statistical offices, ministries of culture, and other stakeholders in the arts and culture recognize, describe, and quantify the economic and social effects that artists, performers, audiences, social groups, and cultural communities create.
In addition, well-developed and standardised cultural statistics are an important element of more effective and evidence-based cultural policies. Standardisation and harmonisation of cultural statistics could allow much more ‘lessons to be learned’ of the various practices of cultural policies and support more effective sustainable development of the cultural and creative ecosystem as well as of societies.
The Compendium has been advocating standardised cultural statistics since its inception and sees a great need for development in this area.
In this context, we ask all cultural policy makers and cultural researchers as well as our Compendium members and experts to participate in the “Global Consultation on the Revised UNESCO Framework for Cultural Statistics“ in order to support a sustainable harmonisation of cultural statistics.
