Compendium stakeholder member CUPORE (Helsinki), the Finnish Center for Cultural Policy Research, has recently published an interesting and profound "Review of the Government Programme's Cultural Policy in Finland". This descriptive and informative report gives an perspective on what kind of cultural policy is to be expected from the Finnish government. CUPORE researchers Olli Jakonen and Vappu Renko have examined the cultural policy objectives of the fresh government programme. Beside the nominal cultural policy goals the report also describes the additional cultural objectives from other sections of the government programme.

A new bill to enhance the freedom of artistic expression has been approved by Malta’s parliament. The Maltese House of Representatives recently unanimously approved a new bill aimed at strengthening freedom of artistic expression, following its third reading on 12 July. The bill aims to protect artists from prosecution for their work. It introduces new provisions to the Criminal Code and the Electronic Communications Act, stating that the law "shall not hinder artistic, satirical or comic expression". The International Federation of Arts Councils and Culture Agencies (IFACCA) has published the report of the 9th World Summit on Arts and Culture, held in Stockholm, Sweden, from 3-5 May. The Summit was organised by IFACCA in cooperation with Kulturrådet, the Swedish Arts Council. About 400 participants from 90 different countries came together to discuss the main theme of Safeguarding Artistic Freedom. The Compendium community commemorates Biserka Cvjetičanin With great sadness we have to announce the death of cultural policy expert Biserka Cvjetičanin, an Emeritus Research Adviser, and long-term Head of the Department for Culture and Communication at the Institute for Development (1985-2000) and International Relations (IRMO), Zagreb, Croatia. On top of that, she took on the position of Deputy Minister of Culture of the Republic of Croatia from 2000 until 2004. International non-governmental organisation Freemuse has released their new report about the State of Artistic Freedom in 2023. On 110 pages, the report outlines the reality of artists caught up in conflict and unrest or those who are living under oppressive regimes. The University of Arts in Belgrade has organised a conference titled “In from the margins – Sharing footnotes of subaltern knowledge and practices: Questioning North-South relations and ethics of international collaboration” in Belgrade from 26-28 June 2023.
